This Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Week, we are pleased to introduce the first Co-Chairs of EEAST’s Men’s Wellbeing Network (MWN).

The Men’s Wellbeing Network has been the applauding result of many trying to make a change in EEAST. With the Co-Chairs in their seats, the network is now ready to support, educate and be a safe space for those who needs it.

As the Executive Sponsor of the network, Hein Scheffer, Director of Strategy, Culture and Education said: “The Men's Wellbeing Network has been established to provide a supportive environment to our male colleagues across all protective categories, to ensure that they have a safe and supportive place to talk about men's wellbeing.  The focus is on health and wellbeing, cultural change and behavioural issues in support of the wellbeing of our male colleagues at EEAST.”

David Walker, Senior Paramedic and Co-Chair of MWN, said: “Since 2015, I have been working at EEAST and have witnessed first-hand the positive impact of our EDI Networks. The Mens Wellbeing Network, which has been championed by many EEAST colleagues over the past two years, is a crucial initiative that aims to address the pressing health issues that affect men. I am proud to be the first Co-Chair of the network, along with John Hammond, and I believe that this is where we need to start in order to make a meaningful difference.

Through MWN and EEAST, we aim to raise awareness of men's health issues, provide support and resources for men to address these challenges, and help promote a culture of openness and inclusivity within the Trust. By working together, we can make a meaningful difference in improving men's health and well-being.”

John Hammond, Senior Paramedic and Co-Chair of MWN, said: “I am currently employed with the East of England Ambulance Service as a Senior Paramedic based at Saffron Walden Ambulance station. Over the last few years, I too have suffered with anxiety and stress. Marriage, having a young family, Covid-19 and just working shifts can all start to add up. Thankfully I was able to open up and search out help even when it wasn't obvious or easily available through work networks. I ended up having to go outside of the work environment to find what I really needed.

I have for a long time thought that there has been something missing for men within the Trust. A place where men can feel relaxed and open to talk about the issues they are facing, to discuss what is troubling them and ultimately to shout about their successes and wins.”

David and John are passionate about using their own experiences to enable and facilitate positive change. We look forward to sharing more about the network and celebrating their successes with them.

The network aims to promote equality within the workplace with a focus on gender issues impacting men’s wellbeing at work.

  • To raise awareness of health challenges that can affect men’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • To fight the social stigma and the belief that seeking help is a sign of weakness.
  • To provide a supportive inclusive platform for men across all areas of the Trust.
