Aeromedical Conference 2023

Extrication event

The 2023 Aeromedical Conference will focus on a multiagency approach to the rescue, treatment and extrication of patients trapped in vehicles.

Road traffic collisions are still a leading cause of death and injury on the UK road network. Every death and serious injury on the road is a preventable tragedy, yet an average of five people die every day with a further 84 seriously injured.

Many patients involved in a collision will remain trapped in their vehicle. Extrication is the process by which injured or potentially injured people are removed from their vehicle by rescue services.

Current extrication and rescue techniques were developed with a focus on an absolute minimisation of movement of a patient’s spine.

These techniques can take a significant amount of time delaying potential lifesaving interventions. Aeromed will highlight the new scientific and medicine-based evidence that is challenging current guidance and offering alternative practice to both clinicians and rescuers.
