Call Before You Convey

Ambulance nurses to join EEAST

Cambridge and Peterborough are proud to announce the extension of an innovative alternative referral pathway solution until 31st May 2023.  Run by Peterborough Greater Network, for patients and crews in the Cambridge and Peterborough area, this scheme is manned by 18 clinicians, between 10am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and currently looking to extend into evenings and weekends.

Also in discussion is facilitating secure live video streaming and picture sharing. The service consists currently of 10 doctors and 8 advanced practitioners, all but 4 are prescribers, all with first-hand and in-depth knowledge of the community and in-hospital referral pathways. They act as a one-stop shop for urgent care, providing the right response to the right patient, giving the crews an extra layer of safety netting and potentially saving time on scene.

The scheme is called Call Before You Convey, a name that doesn’t go far enough to describe the set-up. Clinicians take calls from EEAST crews and act as a solution for patients who fall in the category of not obviously needing Emergency Department conveyance.

Here’s what some crews have said about the service:

“Really great service with brilliant advice. Managed to avoid many inappropriate trips to A&E by keeping some patients in the community.”

“Excellent advice. Clinicians friendly and helpful.”

“Excellent support as they have access to detailed records eg scans. In addition to their enhanced knowledge.”
