Change to Motor Accident Reporting reaping benefits in first year

The Trust is benefitting from a change in Accident reporting procedures in the first year since it has been introduced.

On 9/8/21, EEAST made a major change to our accident reporting procedures; drivers now report accidents directly to our insurer QBE from the scene and all the details of the accident are taken down, the claim is logged and the Fleet department is notified directly by QBE.

This speeds up the reporting process, and removes the need for drivers to complete a paper accident form, or complete a Datix, unless there is an injury or near miss injury involved.

This has seen the same day reporting percentage rise from a mean of 6% to a huge 73%, with the average reporting time for called in cases being just 0.5 days.

  09/08/2020 - 08/08/2021 09/08/2021 - 08/08/2022
Claims reported 918 1,713
% reported by telephone <1% 87%
Average speed to report (all methods) 6 days 2.3 days
% reported on the same day 6% 73%
Third-party capture rate 64% 84%
Number of successful TP interventions 85 122

This means that our insurers, QBE, have a chance to intercede with the third party in fault claims to arrange both hire and repair through their own suppliers at a greatly reduced cost to those charged by third party insurers; resulting in an average saving per fault claim of £2054.

The cost savings to the Trust are significant and are only going to increase going forward. Thank you for all your efforts in ensuring vehicle damage and incidents are reported as swiftly as possible to drive costs down even further, meaning the trust can re-invest those funds elsewhere. With your help we can push those numbers even higher, and save ever more funds to be used elsewhere within the trust.

By now all EEAST vehicles should have a keyring with the telephone number to report accidents, 0808 100 8181

If your vehicle does not have one, please ask your line manager for one, or contact the fleet insurance office RTCreporting@eastamb.nhs.uk
