ECA to EMT progression

Ambulance line up blue sky

As part of our desire to simplify and clarify our progression pathways, the decision has been made for EEAST to move away from EMT apprenticeships. Consequently the training and education team have been developing an alternative education pathway for our band 3 clinicians to progress to EMT’s.

The current apprentice EMT route takes around 18 months and is designed for all levels including people who may never have worked in the NHS before. For our ECAs, who have already accrued essential experience, we have been working on a pathway for them to reach EMT level that recognises this prior learning.

Our planed education programme will provide an academic EMT qualification (known as associate ambulance practitioner (AAP)) and will allow entry into the paramedic degree apprenticeship in the future.

The first ECA to EMT course is planned for Autumn with further courses throughout 2024, providing a route for ECAs to reach EMT level.

If you have already applied for the AEMT course, you will not need to re-apply. We will start filtering ECA applicants shortly.
