June is Pride month!

Pride Month 2023

Pride month is celebrated throughout the world for the month of June and is dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the LGBT+ community.

The month first began as a result of the Stonewall Riots, where a series of riots took place over several days in June 1969 to fight for gay liberation. They began after a police raid in Stonewall Inn, hence the name Stonewall Riots. The Inn was a gay bar located in lower Manhattan in New York City.

Pride marches began the following year in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco to mark the anniversary of the riots, and today they continue to take place throughout the world. You can read more about the Stonewall Riots here.

Alongside EEAST’s LGBT+ network, the Trust will be celebrating Pride throughout the month, where we will be sharing updates from the network, stories from our staff members, a blog from our Director of Strategy, Culture and Education Hein Scheffer, and much more. The results of EEAST recent LGBT staff survey will also be shared later on today.

The regions Pride events will also begin this month and take place throughout the summer, and it is not too late to get involved, you can find out more information here.

The months celebrations are not limited to our internal communications, with our digital team sharing a host of fantastic content online as well, including coverage of the National Ambulance LGBT+ conference which will take place on 15th and 16th June. Follow us and the network on our social media accounts below.

It is not too late to get involved in Pride month, if you have a story that you would like to share please email InternalCommunications@eastamb.nhs.uk.

We would also encourage staff to use the MS Teams background to show their support throughout the month.
