KARMA2 is now live!

Emergency Response

The new research study, KARMA2, has now started across Cambridgeshire. It is evaluating ambulance clinician use of ketone meters to identify diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and aid the initiation of fluid therapy for these patients.

Study clinicians at Cambridge, Huntingdon and Peterborough are recruiting patients with hyperglycaemia (blood glucose greater than 11mmol/L) and patients with diabetes who are unwell. Whether a patient requires ongoing hospital care at either Addenbrookes, Hinchingbrooke or Peterborough City Hospital, or can remain at home following ambulance care, they can consent to participate in KARMA2.

The study is currently collecting data to help determine how many people may benefit from ketone meter use in the ambulance setting. Following this, ketone meters will be made available for study clinicians to use to identify high-risk DKA patients and start fluid treatment.

If you are a Cambridgeshire clinician who has completed the KARMA2 training, please do pick up your Recruitment Wallet – you can now start this study!

If you have any queries about KARMA2, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with Tom Strudwick (KARMA2 Research Paramedic) on 07594 646589 or the study team via research@eastamb.nhs.uk.
