Managing clinical waste is changing – how will this affect you?

Blurred ambulance

The way we dispose and manage clinical waste is changing soon.

To bring us in line with legislation, national guidelines and as part of best practice, there will be a change of waste bags on vehicles.

These bags will be:

  • Black or clear – domestic and similar waste
  • yellow and black (tiger stripe) – offensive/ hygiene waste, such as low infection risk bodily fluids
  • orange – items contaminated with infected bodily fluids or blood etc.
  • yellow –  Are being removed from most front line vehicles.

This new way of separating clinical waste will ensure we are efficiently disposing waste and following the law. The new bags should be coming to stations in July.

We are currently putting together guidance about what should be placed in each bin and want to hear from you on how you’d like the info. Would you like posters for stations as reminders? A video? A pocketcard? Or maybe even all of these – please post a comment below and let us know.

If you’d like to get involved in the project itself and helping to spread the word on station, please touch base with your local management team by next Friday (17th March).
