New permanent Directors appointed

I’m writing to give you an update on the appointment process to our Executive team and I’m really pleased to be able to announce the first three permanent executives who will be joining us, these are:

  • Hein Scheffer, joining us as Director of Strategy Culture and Education in April 2022.
  • Marika Stephenson, joining us as Director of People Services on 1st December 2021.
  • Emma De-Carteret, as Director of Corporate Affairs and Performance on 1st December 2021.

Hein SchefferHein is currently working at Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care System (ICS) as Director of People Transformation. He has worked across the Clinical Commissioning Groups of Luton, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and West Essex for several years and, prior to that, was Director of HR and OD at hospital trusts in both Plymouth and Blackpool.

Speaking about taking on the new role, Hein said: 'I am really excited about the opportunity to join the Executive Team at EEAST and to make a constructive contribution towards the Ambulance Trust, its people, and the communities it serves.

'From the early discussions I have had with current staff at EEAST, I truly believe that the organisation has the ability and capacity to become an outstanding organisation, and I look forward to playing my part in ensuring that we build on the current efforts; to continue to develop and grow; whilst looking at best practices from others.  I am particularly impressed with the large number of volunteers who are already engaged with EEAST and am keen to make them even more a part of the EEAST team in the future.'

Marika StephensonMarika joins us after 10 and a half years with Rio Tinto (FTSE 100) global mining company. Marika spent the first seven years based in Rio Tinto's HQ in London and the last few years based in their Montreal hub. She led a large HR team based across US, Canada, South America, Africa and Europe.

Marika said, 'I am very excited and honoured to be joining such a dedicated and hard-working team here at EEAST.  You should all be very proud of what you have achieved over the last 18 months. Improving your people experience and well-being is my key priority and paramount to the service we provide within our communities.

'Your knowledge, experience and feedback are all essential to enabling our transformation journey, so I encourage you to be open and passionate about what matters to you. Over the coming weeks and months, I really look forward to meeting many of you across the region.'

Many of you will already know Emma, who is currently our Head of Governance and has worked for the Trust for over 11 years across a range of different teams and directorates.

Emma DeCarteretEmma said, ‘It is an absolute privilege to be taking on my first director post here at EEAST. I’m excited to be able to continue working with everyone to make the changes that we need to see happen; for our patients, our staff, our volunteers and every one linked to our organisation. I know first hand the hard work and commitment across all of our teams, and it’s so important that we continue to improve the way we listen, act on feedback, and continuously improve together.

‘We have taken significant action over the last couple of years in a really challenging period for everyone, and I am looking forward to continuing this journey with you all.’

I will shortly also be announcing the names of the people we have appointed to the positions of Director of Integration and Interim Medical Director once their employment checks have been concluded.

We’re now entering a period of transition for the organisation and it’s important to make sure that we don’t destabilise the good work that is already underway, to support us through that transition I’ve made two arrangements particularly focused on continuing our culture work and to strengthen our improvement work for our learners:

  • Firstly, I’ve asked Steve Mason to take on the role of Culture Programme Director to cover the period between now and when Hein starts with us, as part of this role Steve will assume leadership of our Organisational Development, Equality and Diversity and Wellbeing teams.  I’ve also agreed to extend the support of our ER Legacy Support Team through to the end of March 2022 to support the good work already underway in this area.
  • For education, I have asked Tom Burton, our Strategic Planning Director to take responsibility for our Training and Education team and the improvement work we have in this area, Tom will be supported by Professor Rosalynd Jowett and Sharon Hogan.
  • Diane Fuller joins us for 6 months as Fit for the Future Programme Director to support delivery, enabling Professor Rosalynd Jowett to move to supporting Tom Burton with Training and Education.

I know that you’ll all join me in welcoming them to our Trust.

Tom Abell
Chief Executive
