Newly Qualified Paramedic Preceptorship & Portfolio

transparent eeast crest

The new Preceptorship Policy V3.0 has been live for some time now and we have been working in the background for the last few months to make navigating the policy easier.

The Principles of the Newly Qualified Paramedic Consolidation of Learning Programme has not been updated nationally since 2017 and this policy still reflects the principles within this national framework. This policy has undertaken a full rewrite to make it contemporaneous and now incorporates a number of separately published guides, to provide complete policy oversight of preceptorship at EEAST.

We have reviewed all comments and suggestions from last year’s NQP engagement survey, as well as feedback from past NQPs Final Progress Review meetings and recommendations made by Health Education England (HEE). We hope these changes will promote a more meaningful way to evidence the development of your practice, to enable you to meet the standards required by the HCPC.

Points of Note

  • The policy defines a consolidation period of 24-months for Newly Qualified Paramedics. This provides a period of support by a band 6 Paramedic/Nurse and a requirement for shared decision making under the Safe Non-Conveyance & Discharge Policy.
  • The policy introduces Clinical Supervision Shifts at 6, 12 18 & 24 months which give additional evidence for the portfolio. Along with utilisation of mandatory training and appraisals to help you gain your evidence.
  • The policy clarifies eligibility criteria for FastTrack which, from the 1st of September 2022 is being followed strictly due to a review of EEAST by the National Education Network for Ambulance Services (NENAS).
  • Where an NQP is not able to complete their consolidation in clinical practice (e.g., alternative working duties, sickness, maternity or moving to a non-patient facing role, this list is not exhaustive), their programme will be paused, where this period is greater than 4weeks.
  • Calculation of Consolidation of Learning period for staff who work less than 30 hours.

We have updated a number of key documents to support our preceptees which we hope will make the 2-year consolidation period easier and answer a lot of your questions.

These will be available on East24 in the next week and all T&E LOMs and AGMs will be emailed copies.

We will be arranging a virtual office monthly, where any NQPs can drop in on teams to speak to one of the CPS team for any queries or questions. Details to be released soon.

Special thanks must go to the MST team at Peterborough who have spent a lot of time interpreting the Preceptorship Policy to make the new portfolio document user friendly.

Any queries or questions please email NQP@eastamb.nhs.uk

Many Thanks

The Clinical Practice Specialist Team (CPS)
