Remembering Ian Britten

Ian Britten

Ian joined the Essex Ambulance Service in 1987 having previously worked for London Fire Brigade, Ian retained a love of fire engines all his life and continued to work closely with partner fire services across the east of England for all his career, notably his close links with the fire crews at Southend Airport.

Ian joined the team at Southend and was a much-loved colleague and friend to many. His kind and calm approach lead him into managerial roles, and he spent some time working as a clinical manager in South Essex before moving on to join the training team within EEAST.

Ian has been committed to supporting and developing clinicians and has contributed to many projects to help drive forward improvements in patient care. He was a crucial team member in the roll out of thrombolysis (the predecessor to PPCI) in his area and was especially proud of an outreach project to support and train a developing ambulance service in India.

During his time in training Ian has been a calm and constant figure quietly supporting learners in both clinical and driver training. Head of Education Chris McGregor reflects “when I joined EEAST as a young student in 2008 Ian was my clinical manager, I can clearly remember feeling overwhelmed by the new challenges ahead of me. Ian spotted this, took the time to find me, calmly reassuring me and putting things into perspective. I am sure I am 1 of 1000’s of learners who have benefited from this subtle but impactful mentorship and the trust is extremely grateful to Ian for this commitment and contribution”.

If you have any fond memories you would like to share with Ian’s family they would appreciate hearing about the impact and achievements Ian had whilst at work. Any messages can be sent to Lisa.Fautley@eastamb.nhs.uk with the subject title “Ian” and will be shared with Ian’s family. A book of condolence is also being circulated and coordinated by Chelmsford ETOs and the Driver training team.

Ian’s funeral will take place at Southend Crematorium at 1120 on the 28th of July. Any staff wishing to pay their respects can join a guard of honour lining the path to the crematorium or join a virtual stream of the service. If you require the log in details for the virtual service, please contact Rebecca.Dawson@eastamb.nhs.uk.

Ian’s family have requested that instead of flowers a contribution be made to a charity dear to Ian’s heart. https://www.alzheimersresearchuk.org.

A book of condolence has been set up for staff to share their memories of Ian and will be making it's way around the Trust. Please see the table below for a plan of where you can leave your message.
