Clinical Supervision Project Manager, Anna Price, talks about Restorative Clinical Supervision and Nursing Advocate roles.

My name is Anna Price and I have been a Nurse within EEAST since 2003. I have held various roles within the organisation with my current role being within the safeguarding team. In May 2022 I completed my UEA Professional Nursing Advocate (PNA) Level 7 module.

In March 2021 the Professional Nurse Advocate role was launched by the NHS. This is a programme that delivers training and restorative supervision for colleagues right across England. This was launched towards the end of the third wave of COVID-19. This was the start of a critical point of recovery: for patients, for services and for our workforce.

As part of the Professional Nursing Advocate module which was undertaken at the University of East Anglia (UEA) a presentation was delivered on active listening. A concept was delivered for the implementation within the Ambulance Service called ITC “In the Cab/Car/classroom/control room/ for CFRs/call centre”

The concept behind this was how as a service which is predominantly mobile and remote could increase listening to staff/volunteers & improve morale, speak about things that may be impacting them on delivering excellent standards of care. This would be for all areas of our workforce and for all grades of staff not just for the nurses that we employ within our organsiation.

The idea is that with trained members of staff that a supportive conversation can take place within the shift. This would be an informal conversation to discuss issues that may be taking place. There would be no formal documentation just a checklist to help inform the conversation. This will help to ensure that we are in the right headspace to undertake tasks such as delivering or supporting emergency care to our patients.
