Volunteer earns mayor's approval

The hard work and dedication of Essex community first responder (CFR) Dave Spiceley has been recognised by the Mayor of Chelmsford.

The 73-year-old – who has been called to help patients 926 times in 12 years – was nominated for the Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Voluntary Services.

A member of the Danbury CFR group, the grandfather-of-two was delighted at being considered for the award and hopes his work will inspire others to take a first aid course or become a CFR.

“It’s nice because I am keen to pass on the message about what we do and to get an award means I can build on that,” said Dave who lives with wife Judy in Woodham Ferrers. “I want as many people as possible to know CPR.  It doesn’t take long and it can and will help save someone’s life.”

While narrowly missing out on the main award, Dave was presented with a highly commended certificate by the mayor at a ceremony at Hylands House on Monday, 3rd November.

The award also recognises Dave’s work as a long-standing member of St John Ambulance Service, the sessions on basic life support he has run at Danbury Medical Centre, his fundraising efforts with Farleigh Hospice, his commitment to being a first aider, and his roles in the parent teacher association and as governor of three secondary schools.
