105 not out! Bedfordshire colleagues rack up more than a century of service

Graham Darby Neil Barret and Andy Hampton 040918

Three members of staff based at Kempston have collectively provided a total 105 years of service to the people of Bedfordshire.

Duty Locality Officer (DLO) Andy Hampton has 35 years of service and DLO Graham Darby has 38 years of service, while EMT Neil Barret is the relative newcomer with 32 years’.

Andy, who joined in 1982, said he had seem massive changes to the service over more than three decades:

“Ambulance staff received only a six-week course in first aid, because at that time the service was still very much about ‘scoop and run’ and we were not expected to do much more than apply a bandage.

“Since then paramedic training has come in, and there’s a lot more equipment and technology on-board which staff can use. We see people coming to the service from a wide range of pathways, and they also have many more career options to follow now.”
