HCPC renewal requirement – professional indemnity

The Government has introduced legislation which requires you to have a professional indemnity arrangement in place as a condition of your registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

This requirement does not mean that all registrants need to take out separate professional indemnity insurance. The requirement can be met through the following:

  • a professional indemnity arrangement through your employer.
  • a professional indemnity arrangement as part of being a member of a professional body, trade union or defence organisation.
  • a professional indemnity arrangement obtained directly through an insurer.

The arrangement must provide appropriate cover.

The Trust is liable for your actions and any claims arising from any wrong-doing whilst you are within your scope of employment and whilst at your place of work.

If you are working outside of these parameters, you will need arrangements in place to provide cover appropriate to your practice, taking into account the nature and extent of its risks. The level of cover will need to be sufficient to meet any liability that may be incurred if a successful claim is made against you.

The HCPC expects you to make your own decisions about the level of cover which is appropriate to you and your practice, seeking advice as appropriate from your professional body, trade union, defence organisation and / or insurer.

When you renew your registration with the HCPC, you will be asked to make a number of declarations, which will now include one about the professional indemnity arrangements you have in place.

For more information, please visit the HCPC website. The College of Paramedics offers advice and insurance options as part of their member services. UNISON also offers advice over the type of cover needed and indemnity insurance is included as part of their membership.
