Paramedics are urging people to have their blood pressures checked after referring 10% of people to their GP during free health checks at events across the region.

The patient and public involvement team at the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) carried out blood pressure checks, while offering helpful advice and speaking to people about their experience of using the ambulance service.

Interim Director of Clinical Quality Tracy Nicholls said: "It's great that so many people are having their blood pressures checked and I would urge everyone to have theirs done regularly.

"Blood pressure levels can be affected by your diet, age, ethnic origin and family history. There are often no signs and symptoms for high blood pressure but those with low blood pressure may feel faint or dizzy.

"Higher blood pressure puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels which can, over time increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke."

The team, who are at more events later this year visited the Howard Centre in Welwyn, Ely police station open day, the Harpur Centre in Bedford and the Big Multicultural Festival in Ipswich. Patient and Public Involvement Manager Victoria Boyce said: "It's a great opportunity for people in the community to get help and advice on their doorstep. I want to thank our frontline staff who helped make the events a success."
