‘A huge moment in the history of paramedicine’

Independent prescribing by advanced paramedics is due to come into effect from 1st April, 2018.

This represents one of the biggest shifts in the profession and follows years of hard work by the College of Paramedics.

Independent prescribing will take place pending changes to legislation and the provision of annotation to professional registration. Initially, this will be limited to medicines that are not controlled drugs, until the relevant legislation is also updated.

Tracy Nicholls, Deputy Director of Clinical Quality for EEAST and Vice Chair of the College of Paramedics, said: “This is a huge moment in the history of paramedicine.  This has taken years of hard work and dedication from College members, supported by the Board of the College.  More communication will come out from the College soon, but this is really a seminal moment in the professions legacy.”
