A new car has been launched to help EEAST CFRs get to patients

A new car, aimed to help our community first responders (CFR) get to patients as the vital first response, has been launched in Hemel Hempstead.

The car has been fully funded through the fundraising and hard work of the Hemel Hempstead CFRs, following the launch of similar projects around the region.

This Saturday (10th August) Ben Hawkins, Ambulance Operations Centre (AOC) CFR Lead and Richard Copeland, Coordinator for the CFR group began the first shift in the new car. Together they attended eight calls in total, ranging from chest pains to seizures, where they arrived in quick time to assist EEAST crews.

On one of these occasions, Ben said: “We are lucky to have been there so efficiently with one patient as they were in desperate need of oxygen, which is something CFRs carry, meaning the patient got the care they needed sooner.

“Today has proved that CFRs can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved giving care in those vital minutes before the crew arrives and the new car will have a huge impact in helping us achieve this.”

The new car is clearly marked in bright letters and supported with our East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) crest. In between shifts, the car can be found with our fire service colleagues at Hemel Fire station who have kindly let us base it there.

Tom Barker, Community Response Manager for Beds, Herts and West Essex said: “I would like to thank all of the Hemel Hempstead responders for their hard work and dedication in getting this project up off the ground and the ongoing backing from the local management team to support the project.

“I look forward to seeing what positive result this project thing to the local community.”

The Hemel Hempstead CFRs are recruiting and looking for individuals that are willing to give up a few hours a month to help them make a difference to the Hemel Hempstead community.
