Alert on use of plug socket covers

Blurred ambulance

The Department of Health has issued an alert this week about the use of plastic electrical socket inserts, which are protectors/covers sold as safety accessories.

Reportedly, in certain circumstances the insertion of socket covers, or their breakage whilst in use, can allow foreign objects to be inserted directly onto live parts within the socket, presenting a high risk of electric shock.

The alert advises that 13A electrical socket inserts should not be used in health or social care premises, or supplied for use in a home or residence. The advice is for any socket inserts currently in use to be withdrawn and responsibly disposed of.

Although we don’t use or provide these inserts as standard in our facilities or vehicles, please be aware of the alert and report any issues on Datix as appropriate.

You can view and download a full copy of the alert from the Department of Health website.
