Are drones the answer?

Defib drone

The Karolinska Institute in Sweden is currently trialling the use of a drone in treating patients in cardiac arrest, with the drone delivering a defibrillator to scene.

The trials have shown that the drones can arrive four times faster than an ambulance. This could have huge effects on the outcome of patients with chances of survival going down by every minute they do not receive CPR or defibrillation.

Director of Strategy and Sustainability Wayne Bartlett-Syree says ‘‘EEAST are also looking for innovate solutions that help patients and we will be watching the outcome form Sweden closely,  you never know in years to come we might have a fleet of drones helping save patients’ lives, not sure if the collective noun could be hive …’’

If you would like to view a short video of the drone in action you can do so on the BBC news website here.
