Behind the scenes: Ruth Spencer, Commercial Services Contact Centre Manager

Ruth Spencer Bos

Our ‘behind the scenes’ feature, where we highlight a person or team from within the Trust, continues. This week is the turn of Commercial Services Contact Centre Manager, Ruth Spencer.

Ruth is one of our new recruits and has been working with the Trust in this new role for  three months.

Ruth, welcome to the Trust! First off tell us a bit about your new role.

I have recently joined the Trust as contact centre manager with commercial services.  The contact centre provides a diverse range of services like on-call midwifery, out-of-hours doctors  and on-call vet services.  We also take bookings for hospital transport. My role is to ensure that we maintain our service level agreements with all of our stakeholder partners, and ensure that we provide a high level of care to all of our patients and callers. Aside from booking patient transport, we are also able to signpost patients to alternative means of travel, should they not qualify or be eligible.

Which of the Trust values (respect, care, teamwork, quality, honesty) is most important to you, and why?

I think that all of the values are intrinsic, however respect to colleagues and patients runs through the core of everything that we do.

What is your favourite thing about working here?

Every day brings a different challenge – I cannot always solve the problem, but I will always have a really good attempt! And I also work with a great team of colleagues. I am proud to be part of the NHS, and to be part of a team that are dedicated in the support of good patient care.

What made you want to work for the ambulance service?

I started my career as an emergency 999 call taker many years ago.  I know what an important service this is, and the opportunity for commercial services revenue to be ploughed back into frontline services was a motivating factor.

Tell us something people might not know about you?

I ran the London Marathon and survived! I was a volunteer for the London 2012 Olympics and participated in the opening and closing ceremonies.

Want to be our next behind the scenes, or know someone or a team that would? Contact us and let us know!
