Business continuity week: Fire

Side of RRV with lozenge

This week (16th-20th May) is Business Continuity Awareness week. Organised by the Business Continuity Institute, the week aims to raise awareness of the importance of business continuity and resilience in organisations such as ours.

The theme for the week is return on investment and, in addition to the obvious benefits business continuity has in the event of a disruption, it will look at the other advantages it may have.

Fire

What can go wrong?

  • Loss / partial loss of building
  • Injury to staff
  • Inability to deliver service
  • Smoke or water damage to equipment, stock, and data
  • Reduced patient care
  • Reduced performance
  • Prolonged evacuation prior to fire service agreeing reoccupation (normally happens when it’s cold and wet).

What can you do?

  • Back up critical data off site (including critical paper records)
  • Ensure fire safety procedures are up to date, known by all and practiced
  • Smoke detectors / sprinklers / fire suppressant
  • Predetermine alternative location to work from
  • Agree short term ‘shelter’ with suitable neighbouring organisation.
