Childline app launched to counsel young people via smartphone

Children in need of help can now get counselling directly through their smartphone via a new app launched by NSPCC’s Childline.

The free app, called ‘For Me’, enables youngsters to chat directly with counsellors and find advice on topics from bullying and exam stress to self-harm and mental health. Each user also has access to their own private ‘locker’ area where they will be able to consult a daily mood tracker and write down personal thoughts. For those who want to interact with other users of the service, the app also offers access to Childline's message boards.

For Me was created by four teenagers who realised there was an urgent need for young people to have easy access to confidential advice and support.

When Childline first launched more than 30 years ago all contact was over the phone, with many calls being made from telephone boxes. However, the ways that children and young people access the service today are dramatically different; 71% of counselling sessions are now delivered online via email and web chat and, last year, 1.8 million sessions on the Childline website were conducted via mobile devices.
