One of our Essex administrators says she’s “honoured and privileged” to be taking part in this year’s poignant display of remembrance at the Tower of London.

Clare Bethell is based at Chelmsford station and will volunteer at ‘Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers’ to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

She will be joining others volunteers for three of the eight nights this week to play a part in the history of London, including the final night on the 11th November, helping to light the flames that will gradually fill the moat.

Clare, who was also involved with the installation of the red poppies at Tower in 2014, is a regular volunteer with the National Trust.

Clare said: “I feel very honoured and privileged to be able to volunteer. This will be a very moving and powerful public act of remembrance for those who gave their lives and to honour the sacrifice that was made. It is so important that we continue to remember and pay tribute to those who fought in past conflicts and of course, those who continue to serve today. I was very lucky to be able to volunteer at the Tower back in 2014 and feel very lucky to be part of such an important event again this year.”

Sandra Chick, General Manager for Mid Essex, added: “This is a remarkable experience to play a part in the history of London and so you would expect there was huge demand for volunteering experiences at this event. I am extremely proud of Clare.”

Members of staff and volunteers will mark Remembrance Sunday around the region by laying wreaths at community services. Thank you to Rebecca Dawson in the CEO Office for arranging wreaths, and to others for dispatching them around the region. If you are on social media and can share photos after the service, please include @EastEnglandAmb on Twitter, and /or tag us in on facebook.
