Countdown to Le Tour

Tour de France

It is now just 11 days until the Tour de France starts in this country and on Monday 7th July, the Tour will begin in Cambridge and travel through Essex on its way to the finish in London.

This will be a huge sporting event and with British riders Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome having won the race in the last two years, we are expecting around one million people to line the route on the day.

We could see an increase in 999 calls given the amount of people coming into our area to watch the race and there will be road closures and traffic congestion. The roads in the immediate vicinity of Parkers Piece in Cambridge will be closed from 6pm onwards on Sunday 6th July, with other road closures due to come into place from 4am on 7th July. To see the road closures in and around Cambridge visit the council website; to view road closures and the route in Essex visit the specific Tour website.

The Trust will have a full command and control structure in place with Dave Fountain as Gold Commander, as well as Silver and Bronze commanders in the relevant locations. Extra ambulance cover will be added to ensure we can maintain a good service to patients in Cambridgeshire and Essex and we will have additional staff in the control rooms to help with resource deployment.

If you are working on the day, please plan your day carefully:

  • allow extra time to travel to and from work
  • check beforehand as to whether your route to and from work may be affected by road closures
  • if you have children, check your school or nursery is open, so you don’t face any childcare issues on the day
  • areas may become gridlocked at times during the day, so please come to work prepared with extra provision of food and refreshments and of course sun protection.

Route maps and operational orders will be circulated next week to stations via locality managers.
