Diazepam PGD

Due to circumstances beyond EEAST’s control, the Trust is having difficulty in obtaining diazemuls 10mg/2ml ampoules.

The lack of stock for diazemuls is likely to continue until the end of 2020. The Trust has therefore been required to take measures to obtain an alternative.

Thankfully, we have been able to obtain a limited supply of diazepam 10mg/2ml injections to mitigate the difficulty in obtaining diazemuls. A patient group direction (PGD) has been constructed to facilitate this change in medication.

The PGD is attached here.  This will require to be read, and signed, by all paramedic-grade operational staff, and above, who may need to administer this medication to our patients.

Our current stock of diazemuls will start to expire at the end of June 2020. It is therefore essential that the PGD is read and signed before the end of the month.

Please be advised that the PGD must be followed as written when administering diazepam injections. There are additional indications, cautions and contra-indications compared to the administration of diazemuls.

Sean Johnstone, Medicines Management Audit and Compliance Lead, will be monitoring the compliance of the PGD and will be available in connection with any questions or concerns regarding this.
