FFP3 face mask for staff

What is FFP3 - Respiratory protective equipment (RPE)?

The classifying system consists of the three FFP classes - the abbreviation FFP stands for "filtering facepiece". A respirator mask covers mouth and nose and is constructed of various filter materials and the mask itself.

Disposable, or half face masks, protect against airborne particles present in the form of powders and dust, as well as aqueous mists. They come in P1, P2, and P3 ratings and are useful in agriculture, pharmaceutical, and construction industries. P3 filters have a higher level of protection than P1 and P2. P3 is the minimum requirement for many particulate hazards, including some airborne microbiological agents.

The Masks

Below are both examples of the FFP3 masks that are available via the Trust supplies and should be available to staff on vehicles and in local station stores:

  • Do not confuse the provided FFP3 mask with the surgical mask.
  • Whilst the surgical mask provides adequate protection for many scenarios, it will not provide the protection required when FFP3 protection is needed.
