Figures show dramatic rise in expert care

HEMS doctors with police

More doctors, air ambulance crews, hazardous area response teams (HART) and advanced paramedics are coming to the aid of seriously injured casualties than ever before.

In the year 2013/14 medics were dispatched to 6,195 incidents compared with 5,290 in 2012/13. Most of the serious incidents were road traffic collisions, as well as patients in a state of cardiac arrest and those suffering falls.

The critical care desk in the Chelmsford control room reviews the details of every 999 call made in the east of England and the critical care paramedics and dispatchers send the most appropriate expert team when they are needed as quickly as possible.

The region has five helicopter emergency medical services and volunteer doctors from the British Association for Immediate Care Scheme (BASICS) covering the area and more information on them is available on our website.
