First intermediate ambulance practitioners set to join the Trust

Congratulations to the seven new recruits who have become the Trust’s first intermediate ambulance practitioners (IAPs).

The group passed their final assessments last week, following a six week programme in Norwich, and will take to the road officially in Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk once they complete their blue light driver training.

The IAP role gives people the opportunity to get their first step on the ladder in emergency care, and will provide them with the chance to learn new skills and progress to become associate ambulance practitioners (AAPs).

Dale Scott, 53, from Woodbridge, Suffolk, was an engineer before joining the Trust. “I was looking for a change of career and my brother saw it advertised online,” he said.  “The training has been brilliant, but it has been quite a lot to take in as I only had one day’s first aid training before this.”

And former lorry driver Steve Ellis, 45, from Wells in Norfolk, joined the IAP programme after two years as a CFR. He said: “My CFR experience has been invaluable, but it is a big step up. I am grateful that this pathway has opened up because there is a need for more people and you cannot become a paramedic overnight.”

Meanwhile, an AAP course is running in Newmarket and another group will start their AAP training in Norwich next week. Good luck everyone!
