Five-day junior doctor strikes to include emergency care

Accident and emergency OPT

Junior doctors in the NHS have announced they intend to stage a number of strikes over the coming months.

The strikes, which includes stoppages in emergency care during daytime hours (8am – 5pm), will include A&E, intensive care and maternity units. Potential dates are:

  • 5th – 11th October (although the weekend will be covered)
  • 14th – 18th November
  • 5th – 9th

We will be putting measures in place for any period and its recovery time to try and minimise the impact on our service, patients and colleagues. These include:

  • placing additional clinicians in EOCs for call triage, so we can maximise ‘hear and treat’ opportunities for patients, and direct people to alternative care pathways where appropriate
  • tactically deploying managers to emergency departments in the region that don’t currently have a hospital ambulance liaison officer (HALO)
  • implementing a strategic and tactical command process to ensure that we provide a safe service to our patients and support our staff.

There will be an operation briefing note made available and also published on East24, should you wish to read it in more detail.
