Get involved in hypo awareness week

Every year colleagues across the organisation manage more than 9,000 patients having a hypoglycaemic event and many more who are diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Each patient interaction is a great opportunity for us to use the principles of Making Every Contact Count to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients, friends and family.

Whether you have diabetes, know someone who does, or are a member of frontline staff caring for patients with diabetes, why not access the Diabetes UK website to brush up on your knowledge? The website has the most up to date clinical information and gives the skills, knowledge and confidence to talk to your next patient about their diabetes and lifestyle choices.

There is also a free e-learning course for healthcare professionals.

This course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing, so is also great for your professional development portfolio.

The Trust is currently working on a number of initiatives to improve the services we give to our diabetic patients, including a quality improvement project. The aim of this is to improve patient referral rates of non-conveyed post-hypoglycaemic patients, as NICE guidelines state ‘people with diabetes who have experienced hypoglycaemia requiring medical attention should be referred to a specialist diabetes team.’

The Trust would also like to thank staff who have volunteered to be the diabetic champion on their station.
