Wearing uniform in public while off-duty

Through social media we’re hearing some great stories about staff going into shops and other places in full uniform after work and the very positive response – and NHS discounts – they get when they do.

We understand that during working hours it is unavoidable to go into public places in uniform, but in line with our uniform policy, we would remind staff that if you are going into public places while going to and from work, your uniform and the Trust crest must be covered.

There’s a number of reasons for this, including the possibility of spreading infection if you have been working in a contaminated environment (and causing possible fear of infection even if you haven’t).

There have also been some reports of staff being intimidated to part with gloves/masks/hand gel, so it makes sense to take reasonable precautions when going to and from work.

The public and national and local businesses are being wonderfully supportive, and if you want to take up offers for discounts and other benefits, then showing your NHS ID Card, should be sufficient.
