Ibuprofen and paracetamol tablets: update for non-paramedic colleagues

Last week the Trust removed co-codamol from its approved drug suite, recalling all stock.

As a replacement we introduced ibuprofen (200mg) and paracetamol (500mg) tablets for use by clinicians at paramedic level or above.

Following this update there has been a number of queries raised by our non-paramedic staff (EMT and student paramedic) surrounding the rational as to why these are paramedic only medicines.

Whilst we recognise that these are general sale licence/over the counter medicines, the Trust needed to introduce alternate analgesic options to replace co-codamol.  As you will know, co-codamol was a paramedic only medicine.

We have taken the opportunity to listen to your feedback and we are looking into non-paramedic staff providing stat doses of ibuprofen or paracetamol.  It is important however that we follow due process and ensure appropriate governance is in place. This will be discussed at the December Medicine Management Group.
