Improving operational staff support during sickness absence

Transparent EEAST crest

Following a review and positive feedback from staff and managers on the recent trial in Bedfordshire, the removal of the DayOne service will be rolled out across Operations (A&E, AOC, PTS and Operational Support) by the end of October.

This has been agreed in consultation with UNISON, the Heads of Operations, Human Resources, Rostering Services, the Communications Team and Operational Support Team.

The removal of DayOne prepares the Trust for changes with the PAM contract at the end of the year. The current contract is up for tender and the DayOne service has not been renewed.

Staff will no longer have to call DayOne to book sick or when booking fit to return to work. Instead, staff are asked to call their local management team, via a dedicated number, so that their line manager can offer immediate support and gain a better understanding of why the employee is not fit for duty.

Managers will be able to provide immediate support and gauge how long the period of sickness is expected to last. They will also be able to assist with making the necessary referrals to occupational health and wellbeing services, where appropriate. Any sickness discussed with line managers remains confidential amongst the local management team and with any occupational health, or wellbeing providers, with staff consent. We welcome feedback on the new process, please contact your line manager to share your experience.

Communications will be provided by your local management team to advise of your go-live date and contact method.

Currently the roll out is planned to move forward as follows:

  • Bedfordshire PTS, Bedford AOC, Suffolk & North Essex and Cambridgeshire & Peterborough have gone live as of 1st October 2019
  • Norfolk & Waveney, Herts & West Essex, Mid & South Essex, Norwich AOC, Chelmsford AOC and Operational Support are due to go live as of 22nd October (PTS will go live on the same date as their A&E area)

Until your go-live date, staff will still need to use the DayOne service.

If you work in other support services, such as  IT, HR, Finance, etc. instructions will be issued to you shortly.
