Joint statement from the Trust and UNISON

Recently, the Trust and UNISON have been working in partnership with a view to finalising a harmonised Relief Policy.

Staff have raised concerns regarding the absence of a Relief Policy and as such, requested further information to help understand how relief working will affect terms and conditions of employment. Following this valuable feedback the Trust committed to providing a harmonised Relief Policy as a matter of urgency.

With this in mind a task and finish group formed to focus fully on the policy, consisting of management, HR and UNISON.

It is really encouraging that the task and finish group agreed a Relief Policy, which after going through the approved staff partnership forum process has now been signed off by the Executive.

Given the significance of this policy, the task and finish group are continuing in partnership to form a fully-managed implementation plan. This work is already underway and includes all transitional arrangements and appropriate time frames for go live and to enable staff to smoothly move over to the new relief arrangements within the policy. Due to our requirement to report externally to NHSE a quarter in advance we will fully implement this policy with effect from the next planning cycle which commences on the 1st April, 2019.

This was a very positive piece of work, carried out in partnership with elected UNISON Representative Michael Whitcombe, and we would like to thank all those involved for making it happen.

Please note the Relief Policy and its implementation plan will only apply to staff when they are working relief shifts. This policy has no bearing on staff who do not work relief shifts and is not associated in any way to the Building Better Rotas Project.
