Leadership message from Bethan Billington

Bethan Billington

In January this year, the NHS published its Long Term Plan which sets out an ambitious 10 year vision for healthcare in England. Underpinning this vision is an NHS that ensures people get the backing they need.

NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSI) have published an Interim People Plan, which sets out the vision for people who work for the NHS, to enable them to deliver the NHS Long Term Plan. Within the Trust, and working with Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STP) colleagues, we will deliver the Interim People Plan to provide the support our amazing workforce needs, to continue to provide excellent care.

"The Interim People Plan promotes positive cultures, compassionate and engaging leaders with a drive to make the NHS an agile, inclusive and modern employer. At EEAST, we are working to align our people strategies to support the vision."

The interim plan outlines that, at every level, we need to pay much greater attention to why our staff leave us. The Trust's refreshed exit interview process was launched in January 2019 and has been developed into an online exit interview process.

"This will enable us to get greater insight into the reasons and details for staff leaving, engage in meaningful conversations about possible retention and learn lessons for moving forward."

The plan also highlights that all NHS leaders need to focus on developing positive, inclusive and people-centred culture. We continue to work on developing improved culture within the Trust, through increased engagement events, quality improvement programmes and leadership master classes.

We recognise that all leaders need to role model these desired behaviours and are working on refreshing the delivery plan for the Leadership Strategy. The Trust will continue working on promoting equality and inclusion and tackling bullying and harassment, to develop a positive organisational culture.
