I hope you are all well and enjoying the last of the sunshine in our region. I appreciate that with children going back to school this week, it may well have been a stressful time, so thank you for everything you continue to do for our patients.

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with our regional MPs in Westminster. They were keen to hear about our plans to embed and improve on the recommendations from the recent CQC report. Although obviously impressed we maintained our 'outstanding' for 'care', they were keen to ensure that we had robust plans in place to ensure we are able to make improvements for our staff and patients. My overriding impression was that next time I hosted the meeting, we needed to be doing a number of things differently and with better results.

"As you know, we are already on a journey of improvement and increased accountability but I will need your help, working together to really realise the changes."

You may have noticed that a number of executive vacancies have been advertised recently. Given our CQC rating for 'well led', I am keen to establish a stable and effective senior team, capable of leading the organisation to good and beyond. The advert has been released for a permanent Chair, the Chief Operating Officer and the substantive Chief Executive post. I look forward to updating you on the progress with these in the coming weeks.

In general, we are reviewing our recruitment processes and working in a number of innovative ways to make our organisation more attractive to perspective employees. I know the team are working really hard to improve our profile and capture interest. Please spread the word with your friends and family that we are recruiting and if you have any ideas on what we can do better, do not hesitate to make contact.

As you probably already know, the private ambulance service SSG, which provided both frontline and patient transport services to us, went into administration suddenly on Wednesday morning. Firstly, I’d like to say that although this is a difficult time for all those affected, we are having urgent conversations with many SSG staff to offer them a fast-track recruitment process to join us at EEAST. This will provide as little disruption to their employment as possible, while obviously helping us build our capacity with experienced, qualified staff. I’m happy to say that many are accepting this offer.

Additionally, many SSG staff heard the news while on-shift for us, and I have personally heard reports that our crews offered support to them at what must have been a difficult moment.

"Whether it was a kind word, or just a cup of tea, I am proud that our staff instinctively did the right thing – and also showed them what a great organisation EEAST is to work for."

Finally, I’d like to thank all the staff who worked hard to mitigate the practical consequences of SSG folding suddenly, and who mobilised quickly to help us reach out to SSG staff.
