Sheraz Akhtar was sentenced at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on 20th February 2020 after assaulting two members of staff.

Mr Akhtar was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for six months, and given 80 hours community service, 20 days rehabilitation days, a fine of £975 and ordered to pay compensation to one member of staff of £250.

Dorothy Hosein, Chief Executive of EEAST said: “It is totally unacceptable to abuse ambulance staff and volunteers who are there to help.

“We have a zero tolerance approach to any form of violence or aggression to any of our staff. When incidents do happen, we work closely with the police to see that justice is done and will always support prosecutions and press for the strongest penalties.

“We fully support any members of staff who have been abused as it can have a major impact on their wellbeing. While we appreciate that we often deal with people under difficult circumstances, we would like to remind everyone that they still have a choice in how they behave – and the consequences of abusing our staff can be serious.”
