I became a community first responder (CFR) five years ago because I live in a village which is very remote in a medical emergency.
I hadn’t realised I would be helping far more than just my own community. This is because I’m tracked while out and about in my car and can attend emergencies wherever I happen to be. I’ve been packing my shopping in a Tesco car park when a call has come in from outside the store!
Not every outcome is a happy one, but I genuinely love being there to support patients and families in their time of need.
It’s a rewarding role, but can also be heart-breaking at times when you are witnessing loss. But it’s a privilege to be able to assist crews and be there to offer a helping hand.
