New bariatric PTS vehicles

Bariatric vehicle 1

Five new patient transport service (PTS) vehicles, which have been developed by PTS staff and the fleet team to have specific bariatric capability, will be on the road in the near future.

The Trust has worked with vehicle-convertor company Wilker UK to develop the specialist features, which include:

  • a larger tail lift with a load capacity of 500kg that can used with a specialist Harrier trolley cot
  • a bariatric-capable trolley cot with electrically powered lift
  • a bariatric wheelchair and anchorage capability within ambulance for safe transfer
  • an electronic /powered stair climber to ease manual handling and promote patient comfort and safety
  • a special threshold ramp to assist moving the patient over door thresholds.

The equipment for the vehicle is now being finalised and staff are now being recruited to man these vehicles.
