The first day of a new career for ambulance recruits – and 100th offer is made

First day of student paramedic course Norwich April 2014

Twenty-two new student paramedic recruits joined our ranks on Monday (7th), as they began the Trust’s first training course in Norwich.

The student paramedics will spend 11 weeks in the classroom before moving on to an ambulance and working with an allocated mentor to progress their education and training over two years before qualifying as a registered paramedic.

One of the students, David, explained why he applied: "I looked at my career 'past' and what I'd achieved but realised I hadn't considered my career 'future'. There was a need for me to start again and do something worthwhile; I was really impressed by the positive changes being made here and so quickly.

"I didn't expect to have this opportunity at this stage in my career. The diversity of this group, and at different stages of our lives, is wonderful and I'm looking forward to the next few weeks."

Four hundred student paramedics are being recruited in 2014/15, one of the six priorities in the performance improvement action plan announced last month, which you can view on the Trust website. This week the Trust made its 100th offer to a new recruit, meaning we are already a quarter of the way to achieving our target.
