New referral pilot begins in Cambridgeshire

A referral pathway pilot for paramedics to refer patients with low acuity clinical conditions directly to the right specialist medical team is starting next week.

The three month pilot will start on Monday 1^st August and will only involve patients within the Addenbrookes Hospital catchment area.

South and north Cambridgeshire paramedics attending patients with one of the following clinical conditions will be able to refer them directly into the EAU3 ambulatory care unit at Addenbrookes:

• atrial tachycardia (including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and post-converted supra-ventricular tachycardia)
• deep vein thrombosis
• cellulitis

Paramedics attending a patient with one of these conditions are to discuss the patient and inclusion criteria with the EAU3 clinician. Once accepted, the patient will be immediately referred to the unit. This means the patient will bypass the emergency department and go straight up to the EAU3 unit.
