New SORT training dates available

SORT

If you would like to join our specialist operations response team (SORT), then new training dates are available!

The latest available training dates to join SORT, who helps decontaminate patients at large scale incidents, have been launched.

The team helps at incidents that might involve chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear or other hazardous materials. In these situations, particularly if there is a large number of patients, it’s really important that we decontaminate and treat people as quickly as we can, and that’s where you come in.

If you’re clinically trained (technician level and above), you can join the team. You would still do your normal role on a day-to-day basis but will receive SORT training at least twice a year, which includes sessions on using specialist chemical equipment, decontaminating live casualties and administering basic life support at the scene of a hazardous chemical incident.

Specialist operation response team members will also have the opportunity to undertake further training, including the chance to join the ambulance intervention team which will respond to firearms incidents.

If you’re interested, you can apply to complete the initial three-day course by downloading the application form (below).  As it’s a mix of theory and physical practical, you will need to pass a fitness competency assessment and a medical assessment before starting the training.  There will be a requirement to undertake and pass the fitness test on an annual basis.

Upcoming course dates are:-

  • Peterborough- 18th and 19th May and 5th June
  • Great Notley- 22nd and 23rd June and 10th July
  • Hellesdon- 20th and 21st July and 31st July
  • Peterborough- 21st and 22nd September and 9th October
  • Great Notley- 26th and 27th October and 6th November.

Please note that the support of your line manager is essential, so please ensure they authorise your application form before submission.

For your safety, and that of those around you, please also ensure that you attend on a rest day, haven’t just completed a night shift, or be about to commence a night shift.

Dates for refresher courses are available on East24.
