Opportunities to further your clinical development

Clinical manual books

If you are interested in taking a course to further your clinical development, there are several options currently available:

National Insitute of Health Research

The National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) has a clinical academic programme for nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, which combines research and leadership with continued clinical practice.

Masters

There are 12 higher education institutions in England that offer a Masters in clinical research (including the University of East Anglia), which are funded for NHS clinicians and includes the successful applicants' salary and course / tuition fees. Further details are available at the NIHR website.

PhD

The NIHR/Health Education England clinical doctoral research fellowship (C-DRF) scheme is aimed at post-degree nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and pharmacists who have at least a year of clinical practice, since graduating and who have had sufficient research experience or research training to prepare them to undertake a PhD, whilst still developing their clinical skills.

The C-DRF is an individual training award and offers funding to cover salary costs, tuition fees, and the costs of an appropriate research project and training and development programme. A round of studentships will be advertised later in the year.

Further information about training and career development awards can be found on the NIHR website and advice is always available from the research support team.
