Personal protective equipment: risk of heat stress

Ambulance line up blue sky

We’re aware that some areas of the region could experience the hottest day this year so far, so we’re reminding staff to take extra care in the heat – especially when wearing PPE.

Wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) in warm/hot environments increases the risk of heat stress. This occurs when the body is unable to cool itself enough to maintain a healthy temperature.

To stay safe – remember to:

  • Stay hydrated
  • When in your vehicle, keep the air conditioning on – but with the windows closed so that it will work more efficiently
  • Doff Level 2 PPE as soon as it is safe to do so
  • If you are feeling unwell, flag your concerns with your line manager.
