Places available on advanced trauma and life support course

The Royal College of Surgeons of England is holding a three-day advanced trauma and life support (ATLS) course next month - and there are still observer places available.

The course will be held at the James Paget University Hospital from Wednesday, 26th April to Friday, 28th April, and will cost £150 to attend.

Professionals being encouraged to observe are nurses working in critical care areas or on cardiac arrest/emergency teams, and paramedics.

The course aims to increase ability and awareness in managing a trauma patient and topics covered will include:

  • initial assessment and management
  • airway and ventilatory management
  • abdominal and pelvic shock
  • thoracic trauma
  • trauma – head, spine, musculoskeletal
  • spinal immobilisation
  • secondary survey, head to toe exam, and patient transfer
  • spinal assessment/x-rays
  • primary survey x-rays
  • cricothyroidotomy,chest decompression, and pericardiocentesis
  • application of a pelvic binder.
