Pre-filled syringes introduced

Clinical kit pic

The Trust is introducing prefilled 0.9% sodium chloride 10ml syringes. These are for the flushing of IV cannulas only and not for the preparation of medication. Where there is a need to prepare medication, ampules of sodium chloride or water for injection should be used with a drawing up needle and syringe (subject to each drug requirement). The syringes are individually wrapped and should be stored with the cannulation equipment.

Please note that you must:

  • check to ensure they are in date.
  • ensure that it is the right product, i.e. IV flushing only
  • that there is no visible contamination
  • document the administration on the patient care record.
