A new report has shown that the ambulance service is performing above average in many areas, with a fall in the rate of serious incident reports and complaints, and the Trust has now set new priorities to ensure that all patients – including those with learning difficulties and autism – also have a positive experience.

Our latest Quality Account, which includes input from our commissioners, Healthwatch organisations and Healthcare Overview Scrutiny Committee, says that complaints have dropped by 24% in 2018-19, and that the number of serious incidents has also fallen. 
Although the number of serious incidents remains higher than the national average, incidents of actual harm to patients still remains low.

The Trust also performs significantly higher than the national average on ‘survival to discharge’ of patients in cardiac arrest, and is also performing well against national averages and local targets in providing appropriate care to stroke patients.
Trials of a Mobile Stroke Unit in Southend and Ipswich are also looking at innovative ways to improve stroke care.

Dorothy Hosein Chief Executive Officer said: “The results show that much work has been undertaken this year to improve the quality of care to patients; however, there are areas in which the Trust needs to improve to ensure all patients have a positive experience in using the ambulance service.”

Three areas have been identified for further improvement and development:

Patient safety
Enhancing our Learning from Incidents policy
Improving the care and experience of Dialysis patients using the Patient Transport Service
Improving staff’s ergonomic and environmental experience

Clinical effectiveness
Improving clinical supervision
Improving recognition of the early signs of sepsis
Producing a Public Health Strategy with Public Health England
Continue with Mobile Stroke Unit trials
Launch our clinical strategy

Patient experience
Obtain feedback from harder to reach groups – including patients with Learning Disabilities, Dementia and younger people
Launching our Learning Disabilities and Autism Workplan
Improving the care and experience of patients with learning disabilities and autism
