Sandy Brown announces his retirement

Exec Sandy Brown New OPT

After 40 years of public service, I have decided to retire from EEAST. I spent 10 years in the coal mining industry as an underground coalface worker and nearly 30 years in the NHS as a nurse.

I am immensely proud of my service and I have had a great career. My passion has always been about patients and developing staff I have worked with. My experience has ranged from critical care - being one of the first nurse consultants in the country – to senior operational management within the acute sector, to working at Board level in for acute and ambulance services for the past 10 years and I can honestly say I have learn a lot!

I have really enjoyed my three years in EEAST and although it has been really challenging, there are some great people here. I am leaving the clinical directorate in a strong position with Tom Davis, Tracy Nicholls, Marcus Bailey and Lewis Andrews. They are a fantastic team, excellent colleagues, and passionate about the service.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the risk summit and the learning that came from it. It was good to have it acknowledged at that forum that this was a system wide issue and there will be changes to how the system manages hospital handover delays regionally. I also think it is really positive that executives and commissioners are working together as we bid for them to invest in our Trust workforce plan. I am really pleased to have been part of the Executive Team that has driven this and we hope it will improve some long standing issues, such as late finishes and provide a sustainable future.

I am going to buy an electric bike and ride around the Lake District and Galloway Hills, and renew my season ticket with Queen of the South FC, undoubtedly the best team in the UK! I am still going to be in the Trust for a wee while yet so hopefully I will see a few of you in that time, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all and wish everyone every success in the future.
