South West Essex launches Red Bag Scheme

Red bag scheme

EEAST, hospitals and care homes in South East Essex rolled out the Red Bag initiative.

Each Red Bag identifies the patient as a care home resident. The bag then stays with the patient at all times from when they leave the care home until they return from the hospital.

Each bag will have been personalised for the individual and will consist of paperwork about the individual’s health care needs, a list of their medication, along with personal items, such as glasses, hearing aids, toiletries and day-of-discharge clothes and all will be transported to the hospital with the patient.

The Red Bag project is a simple change that will facilitate a smoother handover between care home, ambulance crews and the hospital staff. EEAST crews will be prompted to ask for the bag by CAD flags which have been placed on the address of the participating home.

Initially, the scheme will be rolled out to all care homes in Southend, followed by care homes in the Castle Point and Rochford area.
